Painting Guide

  • Brushes: Flat, round, and detail brushes of various sizes
  • Palette for mixing colors

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preparing Your Canvas

Before you begin painting: Use the artist's grid included in your Pack to lightly sketch the outlines of the mountains, trees, and loch on your canvas using a pencil or charcoal. This grid will help maintain proportions and accuracy in your composition.

Step 2: Painting the Sky

  1. Mix Ultramarine Blue with a touch of Titanium White to create a soft sky blue.
  2. Using a flat brush, apply the blue evenly across the top portion of the canvas, lightening it towards the horizon.
  3. Add wispy clouds by mixing a small amount of Alizarin Crimson with Titanium White and lightly dabbing with a round brush.

Step 3: Creating the Distant Mountains

  1. Mix Ultramarine Blue with Alizarin Crimson to form a muted purple tone.
  2. Using this mix, paint the farthest mountains, keeping the color light and diluted to suggest distance.
  3. As you move forward in the composition, deepen the purple by adding more blue and Alizarin Crimson, creating layers and depth.

Step 4: Adding the Trees and Shoreline

  1. Mix Sap Green with a bit of Yellow Ochre for the trees on the shoreline.
  2. With a detail brush, paint the cluster of trees, adding hints of shadow with a mix of Burnt Sienna and Sap Green.
  3. Paint the shoreline with a mix of Yellow Ochre, Titanium White, and a touch of Sap Green.

Step 5: Painting the Loch

  1. Mix the colors of the sky and distant mountains into the loch to create a reflective effect.
  2. Use horizontal brushstrokes to mimic the water’s surface, blending blues, purples, and whites.
  3. Add subtle details of grass in the foreground using a mix of Sap Green and Burnt Sienna.

Step 6: Final Touches

  • Refine edges and details using a smaller brush.
  • Adjust highlights and shadows to enhance the depth and realism of the scene.
  • Allow the painting to dry completely, making any final adjustments as needed.

Using the Line Drawings and Grid

Line Drawings: Use these as a reference to ensure accuracy in shapes and forms, particularly for the mountains and trees.

Grid: The grid assists in maintaining proportional accuracy and guides you in placing key elements correctly on the canvas. Match the grid lines on your canvas with those in the line drawing for precise placement.
